My be this was the longest break in my blogging, May be last few months were so eventful, probably I didnt had time... Ya time, for my thoughts, time for my friends etc. Some times in life you start running so fast that you dont realized it. And then suddenly every thing comes to a still and you realise you missed somthing very important. On on 23rd Nov, I lost my friend, Indro.

i don’t agree to the point of view that "HRD ministry is helping American universities to come to India ~~and lure IIT professors into betraying their country~~." .. Why can’t we look at it this way that if foreign universities setup their "shops" (campus) it could help reverse brain drain or rather brain gain... and towards the point of luring IIT Profs. I think rather than being afraid of the wealthy giants we sud focus on making our facilities better and stronger so that we don’t lose out. I think we have had enough of protectionism policy, which was proved to be good at the time of independence... But now our country is more than 60 years old and our economy is capable of handling major recessions in the world... So, in my personal opinion it’s a time to open up take the world head on....

Big science projects have always faced questions. Probably one of the best answers to them was given by Robert Wilson, who went on to be the first director of Fermilab, housing the giant multimilliondollar particle accelerator, outside Chicago. In Congress in 1969, Wilson was quizzed about the value of the accelerator to US security and asked to justify the expenditure. He responded: “It has only to do with…the dignity of men, our love of culture. It has to do with: Are we good painters, good sculptors, great poets?...all the things we really venerate in our country and are patriotic about. It has nothing to do directly with defending our country except to make it worth defending.”

Battle Nepal round two.....

There have been really very interesting developments in nepal in last few days.... the most significant one, at least according to me is Nepal government taking back their decision to give Nepali passport contract to an Indian firm…. A open blackmail by the Maoists. The second most significant development is a 6 days general strike taking the country to a standstill. I have a serious doubt about the public support to this china driven proxy war. I just read a article on BBC website….

On Tuesday, shopkeepers in Kathmandu clashed with Maoists who were preventing them from opening their businesses.

"If it is too much, the local people will react," says Subarna Brajracharya, who owns a small shop in the capital.

"The people will not be in a position to tolerate this. They'll come out into the streets and start fighting the Maoists. I'm ready to do this myself."

Meanwhile, the stalemate continues with the Maoists refusing to call off the strike until the prime minister resigns and the government refusing to be forced out from the streets.

Both sides appear willing to continue the strike for as long as it takes for the other to break.

"While ordinary citizens suffer, political elites battle this out," says journalist Prashant Jha.

"The hope is there will be enough popular pressure on them to reach a deal so that the country can go back to normal."

Whenever I read something about Nepal it always appears to me a "clash of titans". Two heavy weights, INDIA and CHINA fighting behind the smoke screen to build influence on the small Himalayan country.
India always had an upper hand in this fight because of its deeply rooted religious ties. Most of Nepal’s leaders have had some or the other connection with India. A Treaty signed in 1950s gave a formal face to the long relations between the two countries; this not only helped India in securing its borders from the Hungary Dragon but also defined Nepal’s political and economic future.
India suddenly woke up in 2008 when Nepal underwent a political turmoil, realising that China had played its game and India’s influence was under danger. The new Maoist PM was sworn-in and talks of equality in relation with India were in the air. Maoist (read China) had already played a very intelligent game.
This new era of the clash of titans was actually stared back in 2001 when the royal massacre took place and Prince Gyanendra was made the king of the Himalayan kingdom, and that’s were China started its war against India to gain influence on Nepal.
As a full proof strategy, which Maoists had already standardised in India In 60s and 70s, of targeting poor and the youth. It first filled the mind of Nepalese youth with an anti-India pseudo-nationalism then poured in the so called revolutionary ideas of social justice and nationalism. And finally country was pushed into Maoist’s insurgency. Then the final trump card was played by pushing the country to end the 200 years old monarchy and hold a so called free democratic process. At this point very strategically Maoists joined the main stream democratic process. All this while Indian Intelligence agencies horribly failed to take proper account of the situation, being well assured of its influence on Nepal. Finally Maoists won the election and new PM Prachanda soon after joining the top office made his first international visit to China. This sent policy-makers in Delhi into a tailspin and alarmed India went into a major damage control. Finally recently Indian attempt succeeded after the Maoist PM resigned. But the war of the influence by the two biggies doesn’t seem to get over soon. With a new PM elected by the Nepalese parliament adds up a new chapter in this story.

I find it unfortunate and I am sure any sane person will definitely will also find it unfortunate. Three suicides and one failed attempt of suicide. These are not the figures of some jail in India. It’s the reality of the premier research institute of India. And most unfortunate instead of looking into the severity of the matter and taking steps to avoid any repetition of such events the answer is its student’s personal and family problems and institute has nothing to do with it. But then these people don’t realize one thing hearting oneself to a level to commit suicide is the most extreme step a human being can take. I agree to the fact that people can have their own problems but if the environment around you is good and encouraging then you live with some hope. So, the reasoning given by the institute falls week. Now coming to the measures taken to this mounting problem a full time psychologist for counseling but lack of a proactive system to identify such cases, worthless student council, a faculty community which tries to find the most comfortable position for them. One thing I learnt form this campus you can blame the world and sleep in your bed with a notion in the mind you are always correct and the other person is always wrong.

Can’t institute take more proactive stand in being little more sympathetic towards the student community, instead of looking at them as slaves and blaming them always for everything?

Be a good grand father to live longer...

Life-history theory suggests that individuals should live until their reproductive potential declines, and the
lifespan of human men is consistent with this idea. However, because women can live long after menopause
and this prolonged post-reproductive life can be explained, in part, by the fitness enhancing effects of
grandmothering, an alternative hypothesis is that male lifespan is influenced by the potential to gain fitness
through grandfathering. Here we investigate whether men, who could not gain fitness through
reproduction after their wife’s menopause (i.e. married only once), enhanced their fitness through
grandfathering in historical Finns. Father presence was associated with reductions in offspring age at first
reproduction and birth intervals, but generally not increases in reproductive tenure lengths. Father
presence had little influence on offspring lifetime fecundity and no influence on offspring lifetime
reproductive success. Overall, in contrast to our results for women in the same population, men do not gain
extra fitness (i.e. more grandchildren) through grandfathering. Our results suggest that if evidence for a
‘grandfather’ hypothesis is lacking in a monogamous society, then its general importance in shaping male
lifespan during our more promiscuous evolutionary past is likely to be negligible.

these are not the pictures of some secluded small industrialized town of India where probably government don’t have much reach to tackle the issues like pollution. It's Burnpur, west bangal situated on New-Delhi to kolkata train route every day thousands of government diplomats must be cross this station and definitely few of them will be from pollution control boards of the states and concerned agencies in central government but it`s pitiable that no body could see this heavily polluting "ISCO steel plant". Blowing a stinky red smoke in air and standing up straight laughing o our system. This year only TERI was given noble peace prize for getting Global warming a recognized problem in the world. but sad what we preached this world could not practice ourselves….. and above all saddest part nobody is bothered….
